The Rainbow Flag: A Symbol of Pride and Diversity
Origins of the Rainbow Flag
In 1978, San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the original rainbow flag as a symbol of LGBT pride and activism. Each of the flag's six colors represents a different aspect of the LGBTQ+ community: *Red: Life
*Orange: Healing
*Yellow: Sunlight
*Green: Nature
*Turquoise: Magic/Art
*Violet: Spirit
Evolution of the Rainbow Flag
Over the years, the rainbow flag has evolved to include additional colors and variations to represent the increasing diversity within the LGBTQ+ community. Some of these variations include: *The Philadelphia Pride Flag (1991): Adds black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color.
*The Progress Pride Flag (2018): Adds five chevrons with different colors to represent transgender people, people of color, intersex people, and those living with HIV/AIDS.
