Fauci Bids Farewell to NIH After Half Century of Service

Former NIAID Director Oversees Extensive Research Portfolio

Anthony Fauci, MD, has bid farewell to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) after 50 years of service. Fauci served as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022, overseeing an extensive research portfolio that has led to the development of vaccines and treatments for infectious diseases.

From Clinical Associate to NIAID Director

Fauci joined the NIH in 1968 as a clinical associate in the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation (LCI) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In 1984, he was appointed Director of NIAID, a position he held for 38 years.

During his time as NIAID Director, Fauci oversaw research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, influenza, SARS, and most recently, COVID-19. He has been a key figure in the development of national and global health policies to combat these diseases.

Fauci's contributions to public health have been widely recognized. He has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has been named one of the world's most influential people by Time magazine.
