Whitney Portal Road Snow Removal Ends

Winter Access Limited to Snow-free Portion

Inyo National Forest, CA - November 10, 2023

The Inyo National Forest announces that Whitney Portal Road, which leads to the trailhead for Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, will no longer be maintained beyond the snowline for the winter season. The road will remain closed to motor vehicles beyond the plowed area, which currently extends approximately 46 miles from the park entrance.

This seasonal closure is implemented annually to ensure public safety and protect the road from damage. Winter weather conditions can make the road impassable and hazardous for vehicles, and snow removal efforts can damage the road surface. The closure will remain in effect until the snowpack has melted and the road is deemed safe for travel again.

Hikers and climbers planning to access the Mount Whitney trailhead during the winter months are advised to check the current road conditions before出发ing. They should also be prepared for winter weather conditions, including cold temperatures, snow, and ice. Visitors should also be aware that the trailhead may be closed at any time due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
