Rizzo Returns, Yanks Call Up Trio
Rizzo Activated, Gleyber Returns from IL
After missing more than two months due to a lower back issue, Anthony Rizzo is back with the Yankees. Rizzo was activated off the injured list on Tuesday, and first baseman Gleyber Torres was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Schmidt, Medina, and Estrada Promoted
To fill out their bullpen, the Yankees also called up three relievers from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: JP Sears, Lucas Luetge, and Miguel Castro. To make room on the roster, infielder/outfielder Miguel Andújar was designated for assignment.
Rizzo's Impact
Rizzo's return is a major boost for the Yankees, who have been struggling to score runs in his absence. In 49 games this season, Rizzo is batting .224 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs.
Clutch Hitting
Rizzo has been particularly effective in high-leverage situations, batting .300 with runners in scoring position. His presence in the lineup should help the Yankees generate more offense and win more games.
Gleyber's Return
Torres has been out since June 16 with a right elbow sprain. He was hitting .250 with 7 home runs and 20 RBIs in 59 games before going on the IL.
Defensive Versatility
Torres provides the Yankees with defensive versatility, as he can play second base, shortstop, and third base. His return will give manager Aaron Boone more options in the infield.
Bullpen Bolstered
The Yankees' bullpen has been one of the best in baseball this season, but they have been taxed recently due to injuries and a heavy workload. The additions of Sears, Luetge, and Castro will help provide some much-needed depth.
Experienced Arms
Sears has appeared in 17 games for the Yankees this season, posting a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched. Luetge has a 4.00 ERA in 27 appearances, while Castro has a 3.24 ERA in 28 appearances.
